Nick for Cumberland
(opens in a new tab)Councillor for the Village of Cumberland since 2024 and running for re-election in 2026
Thank you Cumberland. Honoured to be part of such a great new council, and to have campaigned alongside candidates and supporters who all want the very best for our amazing Village.
There may be beers and celebration tonight, then there is the sober duty to represent every single resident and build a future for us all. Looking forward to working with and for you all.

Hey Cumberland - it's Local Election Day tomorrow - Saturday 17th. And that means that the only knock on your door will come from those provincial candidates - we're done! - and it's been great to talk with so many of you on the doorstep, around the village and wherever we've met.
Campaigns are exhausting, for candidates and citizens alike, and I have so much gratitude for everyone involved in this messy thing we call democracy. So if you aren't one of the 23%+ Cumberland voters who got to the advance polls, please, use that hard-won right and take time to get to the Cultural Centre between 8am and 8pm and cast your votes. ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅

I'm working again with the Cumberland Museum and Archives on digital storytelling and photos, and this lovely throwback popped up today. 1973 Council meeting. More paper, less table, more cigarettes, and apparently more elections - held every year for staggered two-year terms.
The record says 'names on the back' but doesn't list them. Obviously, there's Bronco Moncrief as Mayor, but does anyone know who else?!

Got home from work, picked up the eligible voters in our family and off we went.
I was the 279th voter so far - that’s about 8% of everyone already - nice work Cumberland, let’s keep showing the rest of the province how to turn out for local elections!

Questions questions - so many questions...
Asking good questions is central to a councillor's job. Trying to answer them, too. Our newest local paper, The Cumberlander, did a nice job of prompting and publishing thoughtful answers from all the candidates, as have many other organizations and individuals. I try to answer as many as I can, and if you want to see how I've responded to those emails, I publish all my answers on my website.

Also looking forward to a lot of good questions tomorrow evening at the All Candidates Meeting.

We walked and stood together in love and truth. I’ll call out, then leave behind, Monday’s cowardly and hateful gathering at Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc. A huge crowd in Courtenay today showed the better side of our society.
Today we remember, and we reaffirm our support for the rights of the indigenous peoples of this land. I will give of my time, my skills and my voice to answer the calls of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Signs and flyers and ads and stuff.
I'm not a big fan of election publicity materials, but voters deserve to know about candidates, and name recognition is real. It's said that the self-promotion skills needed to get elected are opposite to the collaborative skills needed to govern well, and I've still got much to learn about both. So I've been leaning in, a bit uncomfortably, to the marketing.
I'm also not too keen on spending money, mine or other peoples, so the approach this time is 'big bold and simple', as one of my friends and clients used to say (adding, in jest, 'just like me'). A few lawn signs, my self-printed flyers and a lot of walking the village and knocking on doors. The doorstep conversations are a part I really enjoy.
And thank goodness we're not at Courtenay's level of roadside signs, and even more sore the mainland, where I hear digital billboards are a thing....

Congrats to our Mayor, Vickey Brown on the official confirmation of another four years. It’s been an honour to serve alongside Vickey and watch her thoughtfulness, dedication and fierce advocacy for our little village.
Congratulations also to Laurel Rankin on being acclaimed as our school trustee.Candidates for the offices of Mayor and School Trustee have been declared elected by acclamation. For more information about the upcoming municipal election, please see cumberland.ca/elections/.

Out in my neighbourhood tonight chatting with people on their doorsteps. Some lovely conversations about how much people love this village and things they’d like to see change and to see stay the same. This neighbour didn’t want a flyer though. ...
