Tuesday we were back at the Council table after a short break in August. The work is rewarding, challenging, detailed and demanding. But most of all, it is collaborative.
As I dove into 300+ pages of reading in the week before, I’m reminded of the work all of Council do to prepare and understand, the leadership of our Mayor, and the work we do at other tables like CVRD, VIRL and more.
Then there is the effort and care that Village staff bring to their work, the citizen committees, non-profits, businesses, and residents that make this all happen. It all comes down to the people who bring skills and experience to build relationships, understanding and, eventually, a better community. I’m grateful for each and every one.
Nomination papers are in! The two years since my (by)election have gone by so fast and it’s been a challenging and rewarding opportunity to serve the village I love. Now I’m excited at the chance to build on that work and connect with many of you over the coming weeks. Election day is October 17!

A safe cycling route to Courtenay has long been an objective for this council and those before. A fully separate cycle path is surprisingly difficult to do, but there’s an opportunity to take some simple steps that make a start.
The 80 km/h sections of the connector could be avoided by using Small Road and some short trail near the interchange and the Cumberland Road junction.
Looks like some people already use that route - it’s not perfect, and it requires some help from our partners at the Ministry of Transportation and Transit, but it’s away from the fastest traffic on that corridor.
At Monday’s Council meeting, there's a motion to ask our staff to seek input from MOTT about the use of the land beside the highway at each end. If that’s doable, we can invest more effort in the details of how and when.

Thanks to Minister Brittny Anderson for coming to visit last Sunday afternoon, and to Cumberland Mayor Vickey Brown for leading the conversation. We covered a lot of important topics and built upon the relationships that are so vital to securing the support small communities need. And we got to stop at the lake and take in the view.
The Cumberland Farmers Market started their 11th year in the Village on Sunday, bringing local food, crafts and more to our downtown each week.
Thanks to Comox Valley Farmers' Market for all the work they do in the Valley and in partnership with the Cumberland Community Schools Society FoodShare program to keep healthy local food available to all.
Lovely to share the afternoon with these graduates, celebrating their achievement and wishing them all the best in the careers and lives ahead of them.
The new name for 442 SAR’s hanger at CFB Comox honours James “Stocky” and Alice “Toni” Edwards, their service and legacy. A lovely morning event, with gracious and moving words from service personnel past and present.
And I also got a little private tour of the new exhibit for the museum’s Vampire jet. My engineering brain loved that.
40th Miners Memorial Weekend, always a moving and uplifting time in Cumberland. Remembering those who gave their lives in the mines and all workers who fought for the rights and privileges we all enjoy.
Graveside ceremonies at the Cumberland cemeteries, a rousing evening of Songs of the Workers and a celebration of this special community.

Congrats to all the young men and women’s of 386 Komox Air Cadets on a great annual review event. Skills, camaraderie, support and leadership all on display today and a little bit of rain did nothing to dampen spirits. Pleased to be invited to represent Cumberland today.
